Advice

So what is a wedding consultaion?

If time and distance are on your side this is when you should meet your shortlisted photographers.

The Consultation is important to both sides because it allows both sides to gauge how they will get along.

I cannot stress how important this is, no matter how good a photographer or the prices if you dont get on its a definate guarantee for a hyper stressful wedding day for everyone.

On the photographers side, It allows us to show our work and advice on how the day can be captured on film.

For the wedding couple (OK, usally the Bride) its where you see if the style and photographs are what you are after. When you have looked at the photographers work, take a note on what you liked (or didnt). Be prepaired, ask some questions.

Questions to ask any wedding photographer

Will you personally be the photographer for our wedding?

This should be your first and most important question, whats the point in meeting the photographer to confirm you get on, and they send someone else.

The short answer is YES, however I do have cover in the event of sickness, these other photographers work closley with me and often act as 2nd photographers/assistants on large wedding commissions.

I would like to add that I have never missed a wedding.

Are you a full-time photographer?

In todays market it is not unusal to find that photographers now have a second job. I will leave this to your opinion, Full time photographers will have set aside time for post production of your photographs and should not therfore rush to finish this

Yes, Iam a Full time photographer

What kind of experience, background, and education do you have?

All photographers have to start somewhere, unfortunatley we have a lot of hobby photographers that are setting themselves up in buisness, they may have photographed a few freinds wedding, a few portraits and have purchased all the equipment to complete the task. The photographs can be good, but then they are hit with a situation that they cant light properly, it starts raining/snowing, the bride is so nervous she cant smile. That is when you need someone with experiance that can resolve all the unexpected problems

In the late 80s, I was trained in the skills of photography as used in Army Intelligence also covering day to day events within the regiment, 12 years later I set up buisness in Social photography, Weddings and Portraits, photographing all year round come rain or shine. In 2001 I was awarded my Licentiateship of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers

Have you received any formal classroom training as a photographer?

Training is important, wither formal or self taught, as long as they have recived and used this training.

  • 1988 RSA Photography
  • 1989 United Nations Photographer
  • 2003 HNC Professional Photography
  • 2005 HND Professional Photography
What kind of input can we have on the direction of the shots? Can we give you a shot list to work from?

I know, you thought it was your wedding, but check.... Some photographers are so stuck in their ways of doing things you dont get a choice.

As you will find on my advice page I offer to take 50% of the photographs from an agreed list, which you can contribute to wholely

What’s your primary style?

Posed and formal, relaxed, photojournalistic, creative, artistic, candid, traditional?

Check to see what photographers offer, some will only do one sort of coverage, which is a good thing if thats what you are after.

Hard one to put as a primary style as I split the photography 50/50. Traditional with a split of artistic creative fun. (Note to self, dont put up a question you cant answer yourself)

How many times have you worked specifically as a wedding photographer?

How many were similar to the size and formality of our wedding?

It may sound like a daft question, a photographer may have been around for 20 years in the studio on the high street, but may have only done one wedding a year and the rest of his work is portraits. The long and short of it is the more weddings a photographer has done, the more experiances they have had with locations, lighting, weather, missing Uncles etc etc

Ssince 1997 we have covered weddings that have been just the bride and groom (with 2 witnesses) to over 500 guests (Extra 3 photographers were in attendance) Church and Civil ceremonys, Humanitarian to Greek Orthodox, infact we have probably covered it all

Can you show me a complete set of recent wedding pictures?

Most couples first start on the internet or through recommendations or word-of-mouth

Though the internet is a great place to begin your search, what you should look for are complete wedding sets, and not just the best wedding photograph from that wedding.

We like to put all photographs of the clients day on-line, after a few months they are reduced in the number of photographs to either the couples final choice for the album or a mock up of the album itself.

What happens if you fall ill on the day?

The least you can expect from any wedding photographer is they have emergency cover in the event of not being able to attend your day. Most professional companys will either have other photographers in the orgonisation or have reciprocal arrangments with other photographers.

If I fall ill on the day of your wedding, I will still be there sniffles and all. If an event were to occour to prevent my attendance I have in place emergency cover assistance with a few photographers I have worked with over the years and selected them for their similar style and professionalism, as said before I have never missed a wedding.

How long will the photographs take?

A lot of couples dont figure this into thier planning, I have in fact had to turn down couples because no time had been left for their photography requests.

This will be discussed in more detail in your consultation, you dont have to think about before or during the ceremony too much, however after you are married you need to consider where your pictures will be taken, travel time to and from, how many groups you would like, then pictures of the couple on thier own.

When planning on time needed between ceremony finish and the reception.

  • Leaving ceremony - 15 minutes for congratulations
  • Travel time plus 15 minutes for hold ups
  • Small formal group shots - 5 minutes each
  • Group shot of all the Guests - 15 minutes
  • Bridal Party - 20 minutes
  • Bride and Groom themselves - 30 minutes
  • Cutting the cake - 5 minutes

So if you were married at the reception venue (no travel involved) for a small wedding party I would require 1 hour 45minutes minimum.

Do you only cover Scotland? We go where the work takes us, there is an additional charge for Travel, Time and Accomidation if we cant get thier and back within a day, My last Dublin wedding I flew out 6am and flew back at 10pm.
Can my guests take photographs? Yes, as long as the venue allows it I have no problems with this at all, all I ask is they dont get in the way of the camera.
Do you have spare camera equipment? Yes, at times I feel like a camera salesman
How many people will cover the event? Depending on the size of the wedding part and venue it will be just myself, assistants and other photographers do not incur an extra cost if I deem I require them
Do you provide a written contract and guarantee?

Yes and Yes. On payment of your deposit we will sign and enter into the standard contract (see here)

My gaurantee as per the terms and conditions is a no quibble policy on all supplied products, I expect the highest quality from my suppliers of Albums and Prints and they have been chosen for this reason

What are your policies regarding negatives? In the age of digital media all negatives are in digital format, I retain copyright on all images and you can use the supplied negatives for personal use
How long before I see my pictures and get my album?

After your wedding allow 10 days for me to work on the photographs taken, I will then upload them onto your personal web page to view.

I allow 7 days to work on your album layout before your final approval

The printers can take from 2 to 4 weeks to complete the album

Is a deposit required? If so, how much? When is the deposit due? A deposit of £250 is required to secure your date, this is due on the day of signing your contract
May I make partial payments? Yes, many couples now prefer to make 3 or 4 payments towards thier packages
When is the final payment due? Six weeks before the wedding date

I know it is a lot to think about, and these are just a few of the questions you may ask, the consultations are free, so make use of them to help in the planning of your big day.

Not able to have a consultation, dont worry, we have arranged many wedding via the internet for couples from America, Australia and even England.
